Mason COVID Updates

Mason has three goals: preserving health and safety; minimizing operational disruptions; and stopping the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

If the university community follows Mason's guidelines, we can look forward to a productive, enlightening, and fun semester. 


Return to Classes

With in-person classes, Mason is tracking the rate of transmission, active cases, monitoring for outbreaks, and working with public health officials to craft our COVID response. Changes to Mason’s public health policies and operations (If conditions demand) will be announced via email. 

Vaccination

We're strongly encouraging all students, faculty and staff to receive a booster shot. You can get a vaccine on the Mason Campus.

Mason is offering a free second booster shots for anyone over 50, per CDC and VDH guidelines. They're available at the Fenwick Testing and Vaccination Center.

Surveillance Testing

Surveillance testing is being conducted on:

  • Fairfax Campus at Fenwick-A.
  • Mason Square in Arlington at Hazel Hall, Rooms B1-13.
  • SciTech Campus at Colgan Hall, Room 413.

Frequent testing will be encouraged throughout the spring semester. You'll get an email when it's time for a test.

Diagnostic Testing

  • Employees: Mason will offer drive-through diagnostic testing at a station by Peterson Hall on the Fairfax Campus by appointment only for faculty and staff experiencing COVID symptoms. Schedule your diagnostic appointment.
  • Students: Symptomatic students should isolate, and contact Student Health Services (SHS) (703-993-2831) to seek evaluation and diagnostic testing. If you’re enrolled at Mason, even if you don't have insurance, you’re eligible for treatment at SHS.

If you have symptoms, please avoid the surveillance testing sites to reduce the chance of spreading the virus.

Masks

Mason campuses are mask-optional, except in certain event venues, health care settings, on public transit, or child care settings. However, if you're more comfortable wearing a mask, feel free to continue. We still encourage you to wear a mask indoors.

There are several minor and targeted exceptions requiring masks listed on the Face Coverings page. If you are in a situation requiring a mask, but have an issue, you have options.

Mason will offer a free N-95 mask to any student, faculty, or staff at Mason's COVID test sites and information kiosks on the Fairfax, Mason Square in Arlington, and SciTech Campuses.

Students Who Test Positive

Student Health Services will provide care to residential students who are positive and symptomatic, and Mason will provide accommodations and/or support to residential students who remain on campus during their quarantine or isolation.

Non-residential students who test positive should reach out to their primary care provider for medical care. If they need medical care and do not have a primary care provider, they can reach out to Student Health Services for medical care.

Employees Who Test Positive

Employees who test positive or are unvaccinated and identified as a close contact must observe isolation and quarantine guidance.

Flexibility for Students Who Miss Class due to COVID-19

Instructors are asked to exercise maximum flexibility for students who miss class due to COVID isolation or quarantine. Find more information about helping students with COVID.
